Cicada

The CICADA installation explores social representations of an imagined “South.” The project employs a universal archetype—the cicada—as a vehicle for exploring the flow of information on Twitter. The cicada’s song has become a kind of subconscious element, leaving its mark on our memories of summer landscapes. CICADA draws on this collective imagery by presenting four digital cicadas mounted on a gallery wall, much like paintings. The combination of the flying insects creates a familiar buzzing sound for the audience. When a cicada stops flying and lands to sing, a message appears—selected from the stream of online conversations centered on the concept of the “South.” These messages are derived from real-time Twitter searches conducted during the exhibition.
